Opinion: Good help at college easy to find: ask your classmates

There is an entire range in age at NIC. All one has to do is look around and it’s easy to find someone your mothers age, grandmothers age and pretty much anyone in between. We also have students that are still in High School. Who would you think is the most school savvy when it comes to maneuvering the ins and outs of college life?

From what I can tell, it appears that it’s pretty much fair game. Young and old alike are confused a lot of the time. Perhaps it’s a better description to say “frustrated”.

Those who actually went through the orientation process (OARS) received a handy dandy instructional packet.

Apparently I’m not the only one who didn’t read it from front to back. Classmates ask me on a pretty regular basis question like, “Do you know where I go for…” or, “How do I…”

Believe me, I am no authority.

The best part of all this is how most of the NIC staff act like there is something wrong with you if you don’t know all the answers. I’m not sure why we are expected to know exactly where every form is supposed to go? Then, God forbid, you don’t know where that office is located. Sometimes, it feels a little like there is some inside joke that you are not included in.

Students I’ve talked to didn’t have a clue where the Help Desk or Center for New Directions were; we assume they are what they souond like. Worse, still, is the scary number of students who have never even been in the library! They all said it was too daunting a place to try to figure out; I’m not even even going to touch Financial Aid.

So, what is the simple solution to all this confusion? Ask a classmate. This seems to be the Golden Ticket if you need an answer to a simple question.

The best part is that they probably had the same question at some point in time. Your fellow Cardinals are a wealth of knowledge.
Finally, as you are asking your neighbor how does one get money for these used text books, get involved. For shame, you forward-thinking adults! Volunteer, go watch a game or catch a play or other talented act on campus.
