Students offered academic help

For students who are looking some extra help check out the College Skills Center located in Lee Kildow Hall, or for help in the English or writing there is the writing Center located behind Lee Kildow Hall. The writing center has free coffee, tea and help. Some English instructors even offer extra credit.

The Skills center offers many options for tutoring. For math, instructors volunteer their time and will answer any questions students may have on hand. Also offered is peer tutoring for any subject. There are 35 tutors and one to three students working at a time with a tutor on the same subject. Penny Weiss, the tutoring coordinator for the Skills Center says, “don’t wait to fail. Find out what help is available before the failing grade.” Weiss encourages students to take advantage of the help that is easily available to them. Students need to make an appointment to meet with a tutor by setting one up at the front desk of the Skills Center. The hours of operations are 7:30 am to 8 pm Monday thru Thursday and 7:30 am to 2:30 pm on Fridays.

Students looking to be a tutor for the Skills Center must meet a few requirements in order to be a tutor. An A or a B grade is needed in the subject they want to tutor if they are also currently taking that course. They can also tutor if they are in a level above the class that they want to tutor. If interested contact the front desk of the Skills Center.

Texts and other resources are available for students if needed. Internet is available as well as printing for 10 cents per page. All math and science texts are also available as well as a Students Solutions Manual for math problems. The manual shows the problems step-by-step on how to get the answer for all of the odd problems. If lectures are missed or a student struggles with a concept, there are videos, and DVD’s of them on hand to watch.

Weiss wants students to be aware ahead of time of the tutoring resources and to take advantage of them. There is always a way to get help in whatever subjects are needed and the tutoring is free. John Harris has begun his first semester tutoring for the skills center. “It takes a certain person to tutor. They definitely have to have patience.” Harris tutors 2 to 3 hours a day in any math course up to calculus 1.
