Sunny competition

“The competition was better than I expected,” Fink said.

Beautiful weather both days gave students and friends the opportunity for some friendly competition. The recreational sports department organized brackets for doubles and fours, providing long-sleeved t-shirts for the winners.

Tuesday afternoon was the doubles competition. There were seven teams, and each was guaranteed two matches. Several hours later, Will Berrier and Kalyn Lovlyn proved themselves the victors.

“We played at the beach all summer,” Berrier said, “so the grass is a little different to play on. It’s also a bigger court for two to cover. It’s nice to mix things up though.”

Wednesday was the four-on-four division, and team Galactic Alliance conquered the competition. Ethan Vest, Casey Marine, Sam May and Erin Bradetich each won a free t-shirt.
Only five teams competed Wednesday, even though fliers were posted across campus advertising the event.

“I would have played Wednesday except I had class,” Lovlyn said. “Ten in the morning is a reawlly inconvenient time. With the home volleyball game in the evening it makes sense to have it in the morning,  but that time just doesn’t work for students.

“But, it is cool that there aren’t any entry fees to compete, and you still get a t-shirt if you win. There aren’t many tournaments that are run that way.”

Recreational sports is located in the lower level of the SUB. Students can sign up for a variety of events, from an ultimate Frisbee tournament Wednesday, to basketball, soccer or volleyball teams, and a variety of other events.
