Students take first place in competition

The NIC Idea Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) scholars won first place against all higher education institutions in the state at the seventh annual conference.

Eleven scholars were selected from around the state and were divided into two groups for a two-week research experience at Boise State University. NIC had five of those scholars–Hannah Edwards of Rathdrum, Caitlyn Free of Sandpoint, Bryne Rush of Post Falls and Ashley Zabka and Sarah Broden of Coeur d’Alene.

“The scholars’ win is news of epic proportions,” said Rhena Cooper, NIC microbiology professor and INBRE outreach core coordinator. “I am so proud of the community colleges and the outreach colleges of Idaho.”

More than 200 students presented research posters, visually representing the biomedical research they completed.

Two divisions were present at the conference: faculty choice and student choice. NIC students placed first in the faculty choice division, which Cooper refers to as “the most elite judging position.”
