The NIC men’s wrestling team competed against two teams at the Cardinal Duals Saturday afternoon at Christianson Gymnasium and defeated both of them. It beat Region 18 rival Highline Community College 29-18 and later Simon Fraser University (SFU) 24-15.

All-American 174-pounder Kyle Sweedman, one of six All-Americans on the top ranked NIC team, had a takedown to beat his opponent of the Highline Thunderbirds 9-4.

It’s good to finally have a match at home and be able to compete,” said NIC head coach Pat Whitcomb.

All-American 184-pounder Caleb Rivera had an intense match against his Highline opponent. He hurt his knee in the final seconds of the third period but tied his opponent and sent the match into sudden death where he lost 8-6.

Rivera’s teammate, All-American 141-pounder Jarrett Morrill, defeated his opponent of SFU by a final pin in the last seconds of his match.

Freshman 285-pounder Bryan Smith barely lost his match against SFU. In a last attempt to win, he was defeated by a points score.

Right now I’m pretty pleased with the guys,” Whitcomb said.

NIC competed in the H.U.B. Open in Liberty Lake, Wash., yesterday and will go to Las Vegas to wrestle in the Cliff Keen Invitational Nov. 30 through Dec. 1, where Whitcomb said many Division I schools will wrestle.
