Opinion: Why do we celebrate Christmas?

Why do we come together for the Christmas season? Is it the hope getting together with family or friends, or is it just the feeling of wanting to belong?

Or what compels us to offer peace and good-will toward our fellow man? Is it because we believe all men are equal?

And why do we give gifts during Christmas? What makes us want to give that which we are, or have, or have worked for?

But most of all, did we conceive these seeds of thought on our own or were they first planted into our minds by some faithful farmer?

Why do people celebrate and come together during this time of year?

Why do people buy and send cards and scurry around buying presents and decorating?

Why do people commemorate this season by the buying and giving of gifts?

Why do people sing carols and put up lights, ornaments, and trees?

Why is Christmas an event that occurs all over the world?

Is it to commemorate the birth of Christ, the Savior, and give gifts just as He was the Gift of Salvation to the world, and just like the wise men who also gave gifts?

Is it to create a reason for people to buy things, so retailers can deplete their inventories to help them have a profitable year?

Is it to commemorate the winter solstice, and perpetuate a Druid rite?

Is it to insert a celebration half-way between the harvest and spring planting?

Whatever the reasons (to each their own), it is certainly worthy of some thought; after all there is very little one can do to avoid being impacted in some way.

Studies show that if one is to promote health and a positive outlook, one must not read into their environment in a negative way or try to change something that so clearly brings so much joy and happiness to so many.
