Bringing down the house

The 5th annual Fall Concert of the NIC Choirs took place once again at the First Presbyterian Church downtown Coeur d’Alene on October 16th.
For the last five years the NIC Chorale and Chamber singers have opened their season with a concert at the church. The concert is generally arranged around a sacred style of music.
The NIC Choir instructor Max Mendez pointed out that this year was special in that the church had only just finished some new renovations two months ago and that the space was very nice and was perfect setting for the choir.
Before the concert even started, the new chapel was packed and people were lining the hallways; both first time attendees and returning patrons were excited for the presentation to start.
The theme name this year was Across the Vast Eternal Sky. Branching out from English tunes, the choir branched out in a display of other nationalities, opening with “Jenga Imani Yako” (Swahili).  Also included in the mix was a more secular Irish tune “Dulaman” and a hefty collection of classic arrangements including some more traditional latin hymns.
At the end of each piece, Mendez turned and bowed to the audience to signal the arrangements close.  After every bow the crowd cheered and applauded. As he thanked and highlight each soloist or accompaniment, the applause increased enthusiastically.
Mendez made sure to highlight other activities available from the NIC arts programs throughout the performance. There are concerts, plays and art exhibits lined up to fill the rest of the school year with a great display of talent. To see a detailed list of activities, visit Schuler auditorium and pick up a free fine arts calendar. You can also visit the school website at www.nic.edu/events.
