NIC sweeps CSI

The NIC volleyball sqaud beat the College of Southern Idaho in three sets (25-20, 25-22 and 25-19) at Christianson Gymnasium Nov. 1.

“I am really, really proud of how our team performed today,” said sophomore Russia Robinson after her team’s last home game.

NIC’s victory was bittersweet, as this was the last time the sophomores would ever serve, set or spike the ball in a game at Christianson Gymnasium. Though emotions were high, the Lady Cardinals were very excited and happy. Most thought that there was no better way to end their stay at NIC than to capitalize on this game.

The sets were a spectacle to see. Even some of the fans said it was the best volleyball game they had ever seen. “This was a special night for a special group of kids,” NIC volleyball head coach Miles Kydd said. Kydd was right. The Lady Cardinals didn’t give up one set in their last home game.

Robinson, who had four aces, came up with a deep dig in the first set that created the tone for just how determined the team was to win the game. Robinson finished the game with 16 digs.

The eighth-ranked College of Southern Idaho Lady Golden Eagles had previously defeated the Lady Cardinals earlier this year, so NIC knew they were going up against some tough competitors even before the game started.

“We were kind of in a slump that we couldn’t get out of, but everybody pulled together and had fun, and just let it all out,” said sophomore Leeta Grap, who had 11 kills. “(We) didn’t feel any pressure or anything and everybody was coming together.”

Anyssa Matheson contributed 9 kills and Allison Meehan ended with 29 assists and 13 digs.

“This was the best game we have played all year,” Meehan said.
