Film Club Screens “The Shining”; Premieres New Short Film

The North Idaho College Film Club hosted its special Halloween screening of Stanley Kubrick’s cult horror classic, “The Shining”, starring Jack Nicholson, on Thursday. The film was preceded by the premiere screening of an original short film from the club.

The film, called “Smoke Break”, features the acting of T.J. Gossard and John “Risky” Boltz, both club members, who also wrote and directed the film.

This is the second short film from the duo to premiere at a Film Club screening this year. The last original short film, “Writer’s Block”, premiered in September.

“Smoke Break” reveals a much darker, more dramatic side from the duo than the quirky comedic elements of “Writer’s Block” could convey to viewers. It peers into the raw, sometimes depressing thoughts that run through two unrelated characters’ heads during an everyday smoke break from work.

“Yeah, we’d come back”, community member Susan Frey said, who attended the screening with her husband, Robert Frey. The couple, who just moved to the area a few months ago, said they found out about the event through the Coeur d’Alene Library’s website while they were searching for things to do in the area.

“It’d be cool if more community members came, I think”, said Frey.

This is the second screening NIC student Koji Becker has attended this year.

“I like older movies, like classics and stuff,” said Becker; elements that the club has consistently been able to provide to the public this year, with screenings including another Kubrick classic, “A Clockwork Orange,” Roberto Benigni’s “Life Is Beautiful” and Wes Anderson’s “Rushmore.”

Audience members were treated with free Halloween candy, popcorn, and drinks.

Gossard made a few announcements about the screening, stating, “We’re always open to hearing students’ ideas and stuff. Right now we’re in the middle of starting a short film that would involve multiple perspectives, directing individual scenes from one single story line. We’re looking for people to get involved in that right now.”

Students looking for more information on the club and its screening times can visit its Facebook page, North Idaho College Film Club.
