NIC men’s soccer home opener goes awry

NIC men’s soccer fought hard, but lost 1-5 to Whitworth University in the Cardinals’ first home exhibition game of the season on Tuesday.

The weather was perfect and the air was clear for the first home game of the season, but there were many other challenges out on the soccer field for the Cardinal men. Whitworth University brought much strength and speed, which NIC was unable to match. However, something else was missing from the field.

Trace Miller, a middle fielder for the boys team, said that there were some great deep passes in the game, but also that the team needed to work on communication.

“We could hear the other team yelling the whole time,” Miller said. “We were just too quiet.”

Senior, Sean “Sunshine” Cotton said that the team needs to work on utilizing mid-field more. In relation to practice and preparation for their next game. Cotton says that the team and coach Ken Thompson’s focus is on “quicker play and just intensity.”

The Cardinals finally got on the board when freshman Hamidou Kante kicked a moral boosting goal in the second half. NIC men continued to push hard, but try as they might, couldn’t breach Whitworth’s goal, ending the game 1-5.

After a hard loss, the Cardinal Soccer men are even more determined, and will be hitting the field in their first regular season game on Saturday against Port Angelas, Washington’s Peninsula College.

Try as they might, the Cardinals couldn't seem to keep up with Whitworth on Tuesday night.
