Art gallery transports viewers to another world

As-1

Walking into artist Larry Ellingson’s “Force of Attraction” displayed in NIC’s corner art gallery is like walking into another dimension. After being drawn through the gallery the viewer might start to develop a feeling of nostalgia and almost detachment. The feeling could be compared to waking up from a complex dream of which attempts to recollect only result in a sense of awe and fading unified perfection.

The top picture of one of the art pieces displayed is titled “Four Voices,” and combines mixed media with lights and sound. The sounds and music with “Four Voices” were all created by Ellingson, and are 200 different soundtracks on random, mixed with tracks of silence that play over the course of 8 hours. This allows the individual viewer to have a unique experience of the evolving artwork in each new moment.

“The sound for these pieces really drove the design.” Ellington said. “I created the soundtracks by composing and producing musically homogenous tonal material in a specific key (G flat pentatonic) combining them with percussion and sound affects that would, for the most part, work together.”

This intriguing piece of art is titled “Tire Pump Box” and uses mixed media with lights. A closer look reveals an incredibly intricate little world, and requires an even closer look from every different angle.

This above piece comes with a story from the artist. Viewers can see what looks to be an amber colored magnifying glass uniquely displaying an intricate interior of cogwork and gears.

A little bit of fantasy would say otherwise, however.

“An early experiment in steam-based weak force supradimensional communications, this quasi-telepathic mind link portal utilizing deep neural embedding with quantum wave transponder proto-technology was ultimately a failure.” The artwork description continues, “This remaining artifact was recovered from Nemo’s cousin’s home in Holyhead, Wales, after his unexplained “departure” in 1879.”

This collection of art is called “Walls on Walls Photos” and is 40 different pieces of laser print on board.

The photos are a collection of photography from Ellingson and his wife’s extensive traveling around the globe.

A variation from the broad, zany collection of art pieces in the gallery, Walls on Walls almost encourages the viewer to open up their eyes to the world around them and see something waiting to blossom in their own imagination.

‘Josh Memorial’ was a piece of art Ellingson was commissioned to do for family who had lost a loved one. It incorporates several thoughtful keepsakes from the deceased’s possessions to create the bigger picture.

The gallery contains several other fascinating pieces of art that pictures don’t do justice. The art requires a face-to-face interaction that creates a personal and unique experience for the individual viewer. The gallery will be displayed in NIC’s corner gallery until November 6.
