1st 1903 – The first modern World Series took place between the Boston Pilgrims and the Pittsburgh Pirates

3rd 2001 – ESPN began its 10th season of National Hockey League  coverage.

7th 1918 – The Georgia Tech football team defeated Cumberland College 222-0. Georgia Tech carried the ball 978 yards and never threw a pass.

14th 1984 – George ‘Sparky’ Anderson became the first baseball manager to win 100 games and a World Series in both leagues.

18th 1956 – NFL commissioner Bert Bell disallowed the use of radio-equipped helmets by NFL quarterbacks

21st 1998 – The New York Yankees set a major league baseball record of 125 victories for the regular and postseason combined.

29th 1995 – Jerry Rice of the San Francisco 49ers became the NFL‘s career leader in receiving yards with 14,040 yards.
2001 – Michael Jordan returned to the NBA with the Washington Wizards after a 3 1/2 year retirement. The Wizards lost 93-91 to the New York Knicks.
