Cards Can’t Find the Back of the Net in Loss to Walla Walla

The NIC men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to Walla Walla Community College Wednesday evening. On the rain-soaked Eisenwinter Field, the Cardinals struggled to produce offense and couldn’t overcome a poor opening half in their first loss of the year.

Walla Walla earned the only goal of the game off a smooth finish by number 19, Juan Martinez. On the NIC side, Parker Gorrill did attempt to  create several chances in the box early on.

The Cards didn’t go down easy in the second half, putting the pressure on in the final 15 minutes. Following the substitution of Damon Gilmor and the repositioning of Irvin Angulo to striker, the Cards got a few chances to make it interesting. The team missed out on possibly its best opening to equalize when Gilmor received a cross and back-heeled it to Damian Bautista, who sent a scorcher just high and wide of the top right corner. That would be their last quality push, however.

The soccer team will look to rebound on Saturday in Pasco, Washington, at Columbia Basin College.
