Paul Bunyan Days: A tradition worth starting

To some, Labor Day weekend is a three day break from work or other obligations. To students, it can be the light at the end of the back-to-school-blues tunnel. To members of the small logging community of St. Maries, however, it is a tradition 50 years in the making.

Paul Bunyan Days is a three-day celebration that has drawn thousands of visitors from all over the Inland Northwest to participate in activities such as logging events, children’s activities, live bands, parades, boat races, helicopter rides and a demolition derby. If these don’t spark your interest, maybe a carnival, 21-and-over outdoor tavern or a massive fireworks show will.

The fireworks show is the most anticipated event of the weekend, known as the largest display in the area. This year will be no exception; the highly complex show is now wireless and will be shot to music. With a budget of $50,000 to celebrate the 50th anniversary, a $20,000 increase from last year’s record amount, spectators are sure to be blown away.

So get out there and see what this small logging town is all about. Check out what Paul Bunyan Days has to offer. Maybe start a new tradition. Either way, let’s end summer with a bang.
