5 easy ways to get through cold and flu season

 

Fall can be so much fun. With back-to-school socials and events, football, hot drinks and fall accessories, it’s a season most embrace with open arms but even a small cold can ruin the joys that fall can bring. Thankfully, there are ways you can stay healthy!

Following is a list of five ways you can protect yourself against the cold and flu season and focus on the better season:

  • Wash your hands and wash them right. No matter your preference of water temperature or soap, wash all the areas of both hands vigorously for 20 seconds. Once dry, use a clean paper towel to turn off the faucet and open the restroom door.

TIP: In a hurry? Hand sanitizer is an effective, on-the-go option for keeping those digits germ-free. Be sure to choose one with at least 60 percent alcohol and follow instructions for the most effective application.

  • Limit your sugar intake. Sugar is an enemy to your gut, especially when it comes to your immune system. Approximately 70 percent of your immune system is in your gut and good bacteria are necessary to keep it healthy and active. So, instead of ordering that popular pumpkin spice latte, trade it out for an herbal tea sweetened with cinnamon.
  • Get some sleep. This may be the more obvious way to avoid the bug but it’s often overlooked or ignored. The fact is there is a direct connection between the sleep we get and how well our immune system works. Studies have shown that young adults aged 18-25 need between seven to nine hours of sleep. So, blow off that frat party and get to bed! You won’t regret it. Or at least you won’t be too tired to admit it.
  • Kick stress to the curb. Let’s be honest: stress makes you feel terrible. This is because it is, no surprise here, not good for your health. Studies have shown that even small amounts of stress can weaken the immune system while chronic stress actually wreaks havoc on it.

The best way to kick stress is to get active. Exercise boosts endorphins to help you to feel good which, in turn, gives you self-confidence. It is recommended that adults get 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise    (walking, etc.) and 75 minutes of vigorous exercise (running, etc.).

No matter the activity you choose, be sure you enjoy it. Exercise is supposed to de-stress, not add to it.

  • Drink up. Being hydrated is crucial to a strong immune system as water actually carries immune cells throughout your body. Women need an average of 91 ounces per day while men should consume roughly 125 ounces. Keeping a large water bottle on hand will help improve water drinking habits.

Well, there you have it: five simple ways to protect yourself this season. But hey, why stop there? Commit to making these all year-long habits to be at optimal health. Your future self will thank you!
