Musical Roots concert grows on audience

Look out Pitch Perfect, the NIC Cardinal Chorale and chamber choir could be competition. From gospel to Irish medleys, and bluegrass to classical, the Musical Roots concert had it covered.

No matter what they sang, whether it be soft and melodic or upbeat and rhythmic, after each song, they had the audience clapping.

Max Mendez, NIC music instructor, made the song choice and directed the performers at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Coeur d ‘Alene on April 19.

“Max consistently challenges the choir with new music and ideas,” said Leslie Coleman, 28, an NIC graduate of philosophy. “I have been a part of this choir off and on for ten years and have never experienced the fun and excitement of having the audience sing along with many of the songs.”

Part of the performance required audience involvement as Mendez invited the audience to sing along with songs such as “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” and “This Land is Our Land.”

“It was wonderful to see the nostalgia on the faces of the audience as they joined in with us,” Coleman said.

One of the songs the choir sang, “Hope for Resolution,” had been a part of their last performance in “Tsunami Requiem” back in March.

“They were so much sharper this time,” said Teresa Dodge, audience member and mother of choir singer Emily Dodge. “It looked like they were having fun. Some of them couldn’t stand still.”
