NIC Student Competes for Miss Idaho USA

Katelyn Clark needed something to do. Between classes to complete her general studies requirements and her serving job, Clark was looking for a new hobby with something more to offer. A serendipitous dental visit ultimately led her to here: Miss Coeur d’Alene, and competing to be Miss Idaho USA.

“I was at the dentist, and this girl who had been in pageants told me I should try it out!” Clark said of the fortuitous conversation. Soon after, she won the title of Miss Coeur d’Alene. She is nervous to compete in Boise on Saturday, but said so far her short foray into the pageant world has offered more than practicing her walk.

The NIC sophomore was born and raised in Post Falls, and said she chose to attend NIC because it was close enough to afford her the opportunity to live with her parents and save money.

“It was the pageant that opened up so many volunteering opportunities for me,” said Clark, who has spent time helping out at Children’s Village since she began her Coeur d’Alene reign. She thinks the experiences from this new venture have opened up possibilities for her future.

“I knew I always wanted to help people in some way, and I see myself doing that in the future.” Clark said the pageant world likely isn’t long-term, but said she will come away with great memories and new opportunities to give back. If she is victorious on Saturday, she will then prepare to move to Boise, where she will spend the next year making appearances, volunteering for charity and representing Idaho in Miss USA.

Right now, Clark isn’t sure of her exact plans after NIC. “A lot of what happens in the next few weeks will decide my plans after I finish [at NIC].” Clark said. “By next fall, I’d love to be doing work in a third-world country.”
