“Wounds to the Face” opens April 19

The NIC theater held auditions for Howard Baker’s “Wounds To The Face” on Jan. 17 and 18.

Led by guest director Dawn Taylor Reinhardt, “Wounds to the Face” is a series of short scenes and monologues that focus on the pains that society and individuals experience in the relationship with the human face. Reinhardt chose the play to bring a lesser-known playwright to attention and said that the controversial work will leave the audience with questions. She also added that she had worked on several of the monologues in the past, and the journey she took with herself allowed for great growth.

“What we show, present, if you will, and what we endure can be excruciating,” Reinhardt said. “Barker’s philosophical and dramatic method demands we look at this ‘face’ on.”

Sophomore Sam Chambers is prepared for a nuanced script in his first-ever play.

“It’s very relatable, but also not. It’s almost uncomfortably relatable, I would say. It kind of has to do with people’s relationship to their face and I think that’s something that not everyone wants to face,” Chambers said.

Freshman Emily Blair was featured in last semester’s production of “Five Women Wearing the Same Dress.” She is excited to participate in one last play before transferring to LCSC in the fall. Blair said that “Wounds to the Face” is a complex story that she hopes will allow her to build her skills as an actor and put on a memorable show for the audience.

“Wounds to the Face” will run April 19-21 and April 26-28 at the Schuler Performing Arts Center.
