Speaker sharpens kNIFVES

A kNIFVES meeting was held in the back room of Coeur d’ Alene restaurant Seasons on Thursday, September 13.
WJ Lazerus, the president of kNIFVES, took to the front of the room full of guests eager to hear announcements and a small speech to be given by indie filmmaker Rebecca Cook.

“I’ve always loved it because there are so many things to love about it,” said Cook while explaining her background and experience with theater and filmmaking.
Rebecca has a long list of experience in her field, ranging from makeup and wardrobe work to directing. She has also belonged to many different acclaimed theater groups and production companies.

Her latest success came from winning an audience favorite award and viral video award in the 50 Hour Slam contest.

“It was my first time ever directing a film,” explained Cook, “the crew asked if anyone had directing experience and they all looked at me.”

She claimed her success by finishing the 6 minute short film entitled “The Birthday” in only 50 hours using just a small professional camera and a 13 member team.
After the meeting, WJ Lazerus talked with guests about some of the perks of being a member of kNIFVES, one of which being the chance to meet and listen to great filmmakers such as the wonderful Rebecca Cook.

“We’ve had plenty of stars that have worked in the industry make appearances at our meetings,” explains WJ Lazerus, “and plenty of special interest groups and workshop leaders show up as well.”

The kNIFVES committee has proven to be quite a useful tool for young aspiring filmmakers who want to make their mark in the filmmaking world.

“Tap into kNIFVES because you won’t find anything like it in Los Angeles,” said Mr. Lazerus, “everyone here wants everyone to succeed.”

Mr. lazerus also explained that if a young filmmaker and student has no interest in organizations like kNIFVES, they should still go out, film, and work on projects even if they aren’t confident about their idea. The experience is very valuable in this type of business.

“It’s why we do short films such as “Without a Ladder”, anyone is welcome to help and even if it never gets any sort of publicity, it was still a great learning experience,” said Mr. Lazerus.

The kNIFVES committee has been active for close to 6 years and has been non-profit for about 4 years.
