NIC enrollment reaches all-time high

President Bell attributes record 4,650 students to 'NIC's efforts to increase enrollment and retention'

Enrollment edged up .4 percent for fall 2007 with an increase of 19 students to a record 4,650 because of a boost in technical and dual-enrollment students. "In a time when the economy is booming and work is readily available to those who want it, it's impressive that our enrollment has increased," President Priscilla Bell said.

Nineteen-year-old student struck by car crossing campus street

Jessica Schraner, 19, Post Falls, received an educational experience unlike any other. Just after 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug 28, and only minutes after her last class of the day, Schraner was hit by a car as she was crossing Garden Avenue. James Arkle, 23, Hayden, was driving a red Pontiac west on the NIC campus when he hit Schraner.

Dr. Priscilla Bell was announced as the first female president of North Idaho College by the board of trustees July 2. She replaced the former president of nine years, Dr. Michael Burke, who resigned in January to become president at San Jose City College.

10,000-square-foot Native American longhouse development halts

The possibility of building a longhouse on the NIC campus was discussed in a meeting with Sparrow Hawk consulting company and two members of the board of trustees Tuesday, Sept. 11. Longhouses were built by Native Americans as homes, a place to build canoes and a place to do other daily tasks.

The new president of NIC has been passionate about community colleges for a long time. Dr. Priscilla Bell campaigned to pass a bond for the first junior college at Tarrant County, Texas when she was 16. Bell, 58, brings loads of experience from across the nation.

Lady Cardinals close season with 46-26 record for second-highest finish in team history

The softball team finished an incredible season in May with a second-place finish at the NJCAA national tournament. The Lady Cardinals narrowly missed a championship when Chippola College of Marianna, Fla., made a defensive stop with the bases loaded in the last inning to hold off the game-winning RBI.

Freshmen barbeque cooks up food, dishes out scholarship money

The annual new student photo and barbeque took place behind the SUB on Aug. 29, 2007. The event introduced new students to college life and acted as a fundraiser for the Wes Hatch Scholarship. Dean Bennet, the student activities director for ASNIC, shaved his head in return for donations.

Emphasis on 'career pathways' causes nine program changes

Nine programs will see changes this fall due to varying levels of enrollment. The modifications are being made as a part of the continuing concept of "career pathways." NIC hopes to expand opportunities for students who wish to get a short-term certificate before entering the work force and later pursuing an advanced degree, according to Kent Propst, vice president for Community Relations.

Peace event to take place in Coeur d'Alene A film and an interfaith gathering at United Methodist Church will highlight the United Nations International Day of Peace on Sept. 21. The two-day celebration of peace will conclude with an outdoor concert at the Coeur d'Alene City Park bandshell on Saturday, September 22 with Illusion 33, a four-piece band from Sandpoint.

Over $3,000 in computers stolen from NIC, women with 'tuition issues' screams at business office inside Lee-Kildow

Computers Stolen A $1,694 computer was taken from an office in the gym. A $1,399 laptop and a roller suitcase were noticed missing a few days later. Creative Parking A vehicle jumped the curve at the HSB and was stuck between the concrete barriers. The vehicle was removed without damage to the property or the vehicle.
