Softball head coach Don Don Williams was named College Coach of the Year at the 46th annual North Idaho Sports Banquet Saturday. Former Cardinal pitcher Kelcey Cavan received the Female College Athlete of the Year Award.
Williams led the Lady Cardinals to a runner-up finish at the national tournament last year, the best placing for the program Williams was hired to start in 1998.
"It was a special evening," Williams said. "These awards are nice, but I attribute them to the players. They're the ones that go out there every day. I mean, they did everything I asked them to do, and last year it was an incredible year. But, really, it's the kids that win these awards."
Cavan, now with the University of Washington, pitched 295 innings in for the Cardinals in 2007, striking out 404 and winning 30 games, all records for the team.
The Cardinals received nominations for Team of the Year, and Angie Boardman was nominated for Female Athlete of the Year in addition to Cavan.
