Opinion: Internet ‘memes’ not memorable

Anyone with a computer knows that Facebook is quite a big deal in the social media world.

Upon its launch, Facebook was lauded as being possibly the best social media tool on the Internet. With its easy account set up and the ability to chat with old and new friends from across the globe right from the comfort of your own home, Facebook seemed to be cut out to stay a huge success.

Recently, though, Facebook has been losing its status as being such a great and inventive tool. Instead, it is now a garbage bin filled with unnecessary trends and thoughtless dramatic blurbs that you would think no one cares about.

The scary part? A lot of people care.

An example of one of these trends is the use of captioned pictures, or “memes.” That’s all my news feed is full of every single time I log on to Facebook. This kind of repetitiveness leaves me wondering: “Is there such a thing as original thought anymore?”

It seems as if there really isn’t. The Internet is full of teenagers and young adults who want to be known as hip or cool, so they conform to trends no matter how thoughtless they are. Memes just lack originality.

I remember a time where people were more literary. Our culture was filled with great writers who were recognized for their talents. People like that still exist today but are not noticed due to the amount of “dumbed down” posts and testimonies that are displayed on Facebook.

This lack of creativity seems to be what fuels the internet and pop culture these days. It appears that ripping off posts from 9gag or Teenfacts is the new way to express yourself, instead of producing actual personal thought, which is a lot more valuable than regurgitated ideas.

Facebookers should speak more from the heart and express their own ideas. People who express themselves creatively are hard to come by. That’s because most Internet users just copy and paste Photoshopped pictures from the web just to get a few chuckles. It’s so hard for people to make something memorable with their own hands.

If you’re looking to get a few laughs on your Facebook, or even maybe get some serious feedback, use that keyboard for what it was made to do: Exercise your ability to stand out and be original.
