Opinion: U.S. should support Israel

America, we have a problem. It’s a problem far beyond our economy, our environment and our education. It’s both a logical and ethical problem facing us presently, and each day it’s getting worse.

What is this problem? It’s a decision, a decision that hasn’t been made and it’s affecting a good friend of America, Israel.

It seems like problems with Israel have been happening for quite some time now, especially over the past century. Recently there have been news reports about Israel portraying many of Israel’s current problems. From rockets being fired over the Gaza-Israel border to Israelis being in conflict with Arabs and Palestinians, there is more than just one issue facing the nation of Israel. There’s also the centuries-old conflict between the Jews and Muslims living in Israel.

It takes two to make a relationship work. But what if one wants nothing to do with the other? What if one left the other on its own in times of trouble? Now, I would say that’s a disgraceful thing to do to another person. If the United States will not support Israel, where does that leave our integrity? We have to do what’s best for our country as a whole. Don’t we? What if what’s best for our country is supporting our friend, Israel?

A well-known verse in the Bible, Genesis 12:1-3, states that “The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.  I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others.  I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.’”

I believe that this verse is absolutely true. I can’t make you hold the same belief, but I do encourage you to check out this reasoning for yourself. Should the U.S. support Israel? I believe the answer is absolutely, and if Israel does need assistance, then we should help them.

Go with me back to the basics for a moment. When the United States was established, our founding fathers governed our nation with faithful values. Many of them were Christians. Would they have supported Israel? In my mind the answer to that question is yes, of course.

If you go online to CNN.com or other reliable news web sites and search for current news about what’s going on with Israel you will discover all of the problems Israel is having. Your question may be, “Why should we have anything to do with their problems?”

Well, why have many nations over the years failed to support Israel, a nation seeking the best for its people? I believe that if the U.S. supports Israel, we will be blessed as a nation. Why turn our back on a friend?
