With the immense variety of physical education classes that North Idaho College has to offer, why aren’t more students getting involved?

It takes two physical education credits in order to obtain an associate’s degree, but why stop at those two credits when you can take classes like yoga, Tai Chi, self-defense, Kenpo Karate, strength training, swimming, cardiovascular training, cardio-kickboxing, Pilates, step aerobics, volleyball, bowling, basketball, golf, racquetball and rowing? That’s not even the complete list of physical education classes! I don’t want to hear any excuses. Make time in your schedule for an extra P.E. class.  The opportunity is at your fingertips.

It’s a well-known fact that exercising is a key ingredient for success toward a healthy lifestyle. Eating is a basic function of the human body that needs to be healthy and runs right alongside physical fitness.

The Market Grill in the Student Union Building is not the healthiest place to eat, but it’s nice that NIC provides a great restaurant-like cafeteria for students. However, students need to start eating healthier as well as exercising more often.

Why are so many Americans just letting themselves flop into obesity? It’s a well-known fact that the majority of Americans are overweight. We should make time in our schedules for working out on a regular basis and form good eating habits. This would greatly affect everyday American lifestyles. So why hasn’t there been a significant change yet? It’s because of a lack of self-motivation. Self-motivation helps people accomplish everyday tasks as well as long-term goals. It is essential for students to have self-motivation to get homework done and strive to do well in their classes. The opportunity is out there, but not everyone is grasping it. More NIC students need to take initiative to eat healthier and engage in more physical activities.

The recreational sports department is always looking for students to sign up to play sports like basketball, flag football, dodgeball, volleyball, wiffle ball, paintball, kick ball and ultimate frisbee.

Outdoor Pursuits is on the lookout for students and community members to sign up for classes as well. Outdoor Pursuits runs classes such as skiing/snowboarding, white-water rafting, mountaineering and mountain biking.

We all love our sports don’t we? With the Super Bowl coming up, one might relate sports to being active, but it can also mean the exact opposite. We will all be sitting on the couch and eating our favorite food watching the big game. Why not go outside and play a friendly family game of football? Or take the dog on a walk before the game or maybe afterward, depending on how much you eat?

It’s not just an opinion that a healthy lifestyle will benefit you in the future. It’s a fact. The healthier you are the longer you will live. It’s time to take an active role and decide if you want to live a healthier lifestyle. Don’t make any excuses. After all, it’s for your own benefit and NIC can help you achieve your fitness goals. Opportunity is calling. Will you take advantage of it?
