Women’s soccer turning on offensive switch

The NIC women’s soccer team exploited the University of Idaho’s club team’s defense for 10 goals Saturday defeating the Vandals 10-1 in Moscow, Idaho.

The Lady Cardinals (5-3) beat Wenatchee Valley Community College 13-0 last Wednesday at NIC, with all 13 goals coming in the first half.

Kellsi Parson scored a hat trick, with three goals and four players finished with two goals a piece.

NIC defeated Salt Lake Community College 2-1 Sept. 8 in Powell, Wyo.

Emilee Cordon opened the NIC scoring attack within the first three minutes of the first half, and Alyssa Allen finished it in the second half after the Bruin goalkeeper saved a shot by Ellie Engel but did not secure the ball. Allen finished the play by putting it in the back of the net.

The previous day Northwest College beat NIC 4-2 in Powell.

The Trappers put NIC into a 4-0 hole before the Lady Cardinals answered with a couple goals by Kellsi Parson.

The Peninsula College Pirates of Port Angeles, Wash., defeated NIC 5-0 to conclude the women’s NIC Cardinal Classic soccer tournament Sept. 2 at Bill Eisenwinter Field.

All five goals came in the first half of the game, including the final one in the last minute of the first half by sophomore midfielder Kelsie Ng, who scored the first goal of the game as well in the 37th minute.

We need to play a little bit faster, a little bit more together and take more shots,” Parson said.

In the middle of the first half, freshman forward Ashlyn Crossan converted on consecutive goals within a couple minutes of each other, the first one set up by Ng.

Every goal-scoring chance they had in that first thirty minutes they put away,” head coach Dan Hogan said. “With a team that hot, there’s not a whole lot you can do.”

NIC fell in its home opener against Northwest College of Powell, Wyo.

Lindsey Nieters and Samhia Simao scored to lead Northwest College past NIC at the Cardinal Classic 2-0.

NIC played Central Washington University in an exhibition game in Ellensburg, Wash., Aug. 18 but the game was called after 30 minutes of play due to the air quality.

The nearby forest fires in Clee Elum, Wash., affected the air too greatly to continue play.

We will keep building throughout the season on what we are learning and improving upon,” Hogan said. “We don’t try to learn everything in the first month. As the season goes on we will learn how to think and be challenged.”

NIC will play at Everett Community College Saturday.
