NIC clamps down on Eastern Utah

The North Idaho College women’s basketball team defeated the Utah State University-College of Eastern Utah Golden Eagles 67-49 Thursday at Rolly Williams Court for their conference home opener.

Mollie Kramer led the Cardinals with 14 points on six of 10 shooting from the floor. Danika Johnson scored 12 points and Kabri Emerson had 10 points for the second-ranked Cardinals.

NIC’s defense, which applied full-court pressure most of the game, held Eastern Utah to about 31 percent shooting from the field and forced 16 turnovers.

“We really, really focus on our defense,” Emerson said. “We’re a defense first kind of team and we’re starting to get into the second round of league. We really want to set the tempo and we used our defense to do that.”

Eastern Utah pressed the Cardinals a lot also, but NIC coach Chris Carlson was pleased with how his team handled it.

“I think we were able to move the ball around pretty quick, get it down the court and find some open looks,” Carlson said. “It cost us a few turnovers, but I’ll take the outcome.”

The home game was the first for the Cardinals in almost a month, but they will play their next six games in Coeur d’Alene.

“This was a really, really great win for us, especially for our home stand to set the tempo and really send a message out that this is our house and we’re going to defend it the best we can,” Emerson said.

NIC beat Colorado Northwestern Community College 87-53 today to improve their record to 21-1 overall, 6-1 conference.
