NIC softball drops first two to Salt Lake

The fourth-ranked Salt Lake Community College Bruins shut out the North Idaho College softball team 8-0 and 5-0 in a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday at Memorial Field in Coeur d’Alene.

In the first game, Salt Lake got on the scoreboard early with three runs in the top of the first inning.

First baseman Kelsey LaVaute reached base in the bottom of the second with an infield single that looped over the pitcher and in front of the second baseman for NIC’s first hit.

LaVaute stole second a few pitches later but with two outs, the inning ended on a groundout by Desirae Tinoco.

Shortstop Heather Bishop turned an unassisted double play in the top of the fourth inning to clear the bases and stop a potential Bruins’ rally.

The Bruins’ offense rallied again in the top of the fifth inning, scoring five runs.

Lauren Hager began the scoring with a double to left field to bring in Malia Campos, building Salt Lake’s lead to four runs.

Salt Lake’s Whitney Holt doubled down the left field line scoring two base runners.

Sophomore catcher Susan Duke continued the inning for the Bruins with an RBI single to left field. She advanced to second on the hit because of a Cardinal error.

Duke scored later in the inning on an NIC error, to bring the score to 8-0.
